Elo lead us through a movement workshop that continued building on trust, eyes closed exploration through other parts of the body, physical contact, one partner is the puppeteer and the other one is the puppet. Elo gave the group time to slowly get into the physical contact, to slowly get to know each other's limits. Enlever l'energie négative de l'autre, sweep it off the partner. On joue avec la marionette aux yeux fermés, adding a layer to the work we started on using other senses for movement and for appreciating the space around us. Découpage des parties du corps, how to express fear through only one isolated part, how can a foot be scared, how teeth clash through the leg. Images related to courage and to protecting oneself. First in the hands, than in the whole body, creating a choreography together. Comment le courage et se proteger vont ensemble, la vulnerabilité du courage, la peur qui est présente. Hands looking like cock fighting, fists hugging each other. Forest spaces created by a game of 3 actors doing the same choreography en décalage.
In the following session we worked with personal memories of fear, each participant creating images for their own memory.

First medina exploration, lead by Lili. First time Shona, Elo and Dylan had a walk through the medina. We were going to meet a friend of hers who lives in the neighbourhood of Nahj Al Moqtar, walk with him through the routes he takes every day, mapping out places he feels safe in and places that he feels are more dangerous (places where the police might target him, stop him for a check, take him away). We saw him on his scooter, but he had been called up for a job. We ended up walking that neighbourhood with Lili, hearing of two other projects she did with the people here, one working on soundscapes and the other one on performance, and wandering like this we ended up in Tourbet El Bey. The guardian told us the stories of the beys and their burials, it is a mausoleum. Le jour des morts c'est une semaine après la Eid. The birds painted on the tiles are one of the only representations of god's creation allowed, because they are believed to have access to paradise. The ceiling is like un bateau renversé. Il y a 8 portes du paradis. Le croque mort. La tombe de Moustafa Hasnadar, the famous finance minister of the Bey, originally from Greece, his house is now the siège of the théâtre nationale where M works. L told us about the gouna, that in between place that people who want to make the clandestine crossing go to before leaving by boat for Europe. For her friend it was in Mahdia, and when he went there he found 7 other friends from his neighbourhood in the medina who had also decided to do the crossing but who had not told one another.
Later in the evening Shona and I go to attend an English class lead by E with teenagers from the medina. We asked about jinn and ghosts and scary legends of the medina. The ghost of the hammam of gold, the bride's ghost, the junun help you find gold but you sell your soul. We can't see them but they exist, that's why when you walk into a room you have to acknowledge their presence by saying hello. How do you imagine the jinn? What do they look like? We cannot see them, they might look like humans, but they are a totally different entity, we do not imagine them like anything, they exist but we cannot see them. They put dots on a Doolesha map to show us where the haunted houses and hammams were, we might do a tour with them later in the week.
